Kieran Agard's five best goals for Rotherham

When Bristol City travel to Rotherham on Saturday it marks a first return to the New York Stadium for Kieran Agard.

Agard left for the Robins last August for close to £1million, becoming the club-record transfer sale, ending a two-year stay for the striker in South Yorkshire.

Those two years heralded a magnificent period for the club as they both ended in promotion, with boss Steve Evans delivering on his promise to take the Millers back into the Championship.

Although Agard took a while to settle into life at New York, he came good towards the end of the 2012-13 season and his three goals in the final four games helped the Millers march towards automatic promotion when even a spot in the play-offs had looked vulnerable a few weeks earlier.

But it was in the 2013-14 where Agard really has his year in the sun, scoring 26 goals in 55 appearances, most of those coming from a wide-right position, and firing the Millers towards a second successive rise.

In reaching that tally he became only the third player in the last 20 years to score 20 league goals in a season following in the footsteps of Mark Robins and Adam Le Fondre.

The goals he scored for Rotherham had a massive impact and were the cornerstone of two of the best years in the club's history.

Here are his five most memorable efforts in a Rotherham shirt.

Bradford City (Valley Parade, April 16 2013)

Although his goal against Plymouth three days later was probably more important in sealing promotion from League Two, his effort at Bradford will always be remembered with a bit more fondness owing to the nature of it. With the rivalry between the Millers and the Bantams stepping up a notch following the arrival of Steve Evans in South Yorkshire and promotion still not a certainty, Agard's goal at Valley Parade put the finishing touches on a win that proved pivotal.

With the Millers 1-0 up deep into injury time and defending a corner which the home goalkeeper had come up for, they broke at speed and Agard was able to run half the length of the pitch and walk the ball into the empty net. It was by not going to win any goal-of-the-season competitions, but the importance of it was not lost on the delirious Millers fans behind the goal.

Sheffield United (New York, September 7 2013)

The Millers' unbeaten start to the campaign looked under threat when the Blades came to New York for the first time and totally bossed matters in the first half, taking a 1-0 lead into the interval. But Agard's super strike early in the second half from nowhere instigated a fine comeback and led to one of the best afternoons at Rotherham's new home.

Picking up the ball from Alex Revell 25 yards out, there didn't look to be much on for the former Everton trainee, but he let rip with a right-footed effort which was too hot to handle for Blades keeper Mark Howard and flew into the top corner. It gave the hosts momentum and they blew David Weir's struggling side away, going on to win 3-1 thanks to goals from Daniel Nardiello and Rob Milsom.

Wolverhampton Wanderers (New York, December 21 2013)

Rotherham were playing some of their best football in years and a measure of how well they were doing was the fact they were outplaying eventual runaway champions of the division Wolves. Having gone behind early on, Nouha Dicko's equaliser had been the catalyst for a real golden spell for Evans' men and it was Agard who gave them a deserved lead before the break.

A nice move saw the ball spread out to the left, James Tavernier teed up Ben Pringle and he put in a superb cross that Agard superbly rose to head back across goal and into the very top corner. It owed a lot to the delivery from Pringle, but the striker's finish was equally impressive.

The irresistible Millers' extended their lead after the break through Dicko's second but Wolves hit back, with the aid of a helpful penalty decision, to earn a 3-3 draw. Agard contributed to a classic and he didn't do bad in the reverse fixture either.

Brentford (New York, March 25 2014)

Agard's scintillating goalscoring form playing on the right had seen him earn a chance down the middle alongside Revell and he didn't disappoint, continuing to be on the goal trail. Having already given his side the lead from the penalty spot, Agard was in the right place to finish off a fine team goal in what was arguably the performance of the season against their promotion rivals.

Revell flicked on a long ball, which Agard's pace got him to first. He laid it off to Pringle, making his way into the box as the left-winger zipped the ball into the feet of Nicky Adams. Adams popped it back to Agard and he hit a first time effort from 12 yards into the top corner. What a goal. The Millers added a third after the break, sealing a 3-0 win and making a real statement of their intent in the promotion race.

Preston North End (New York, May 15 2014)

Having missed the play-off semi-final first leg at Preston through injury, Agard made sure everyone knew he was back with a goal that made it 3-1 and put one foot on Wembley Way for the Millers. Evans' men had overcome an early deficit to lead thanks to headers from Wes Thomas and Lee Frecklington, but it was Agard's strike which really got New York bouncing.

After brilliant work from Tavernier down the right, the on-loan Newcastle man slipped the ball into Agard, who, with nonchalant ease, rolled the ball into the bottom corner to make the game safe for the hosts. It was his 26th goal of the season and, apart from a penalty in the famous shootout win in the play-off final, was the last time he scored in the red and white of Rotherham.
